Obama’s “Health Care Reform” Plan

President Barack Obama has delivered several sobering details that clearly show his degree of transparency in reforming the current healthcare system within the United States.

Many of these details are aimed at providing healthcare coverage for the uninsured, a bold step that hasn’t been attempted yet in any U.S. administration.  President Obama plans to pay for this reform in part by cutting federal payments to hospitals, insurance companies and drug companies.

As was outlined in a NYTimes article from February 26, 2009, Obama will “increase premiums charged to Medicare beneficiaries with higher incomes for prescription drug coverage.”  He also proposed for an “increase of access to family planning services for low-income women by expanding eligibility under Medicaid. A similar proposal was dropped from the recent economic stimulus bill after it provoked an outcry from Republicans.”

“Mr. Obama asked Congress to set aside $634 billion in a ‘reserve fund for health care reform,'” and the interesting fact is that about 45% of this total will be funded by increased taxes to individuals who make up the highest bracket in terms of salary and income. This taxation must wait until the end of  2010, however,  because the Bush Administration had given tax cuts to individuals who make over $250,000 a year until that time.

I believe that this president has taken forever to come into office.  Given that I am only 23-years-old, I have parents and they have been more than grateful to have a president of this stature to be running things and making suggestions that turn into law on Capitol Hill.

Many people believe that this type of legislation will lead to a socialistic form of government, which is apparently not entirely favorable by the citizenry.  People, however, need to understand that the current form of government is not consistent with the times we all face as a national and global neighborhood.  Maybe it’s not specifically the form of government that is the issue, but the politics and infrastructure of this nation have been out of whack for so long that the current situation has surfaced.  Earmark projects for bridges to nowhere and unnecessary pork-barrel funding have ensued for too long, and the current President of the United States of America is almost like a godsend who really seems to have a consortium of tactics to get the American people out of this mess and back to economic health.
